Snippet of the Month: Acorns



My name is Yvonne also known as Indu. I didn’t go the College route and decided to learn from the streets for the past 30 plus years.   I have been a practicing License Massage Therapist for over 19 years.  Then the past 2-4 years I have been expanding my knowledge with  Yoga, Aromatherapy and Herbs.  I hope you enjoy my blog on some of things I have been learning along the way...Namaste Indu




I would have to say thank you to the Native Americans who traveled through the oak growing world.  Because of these adventurous humans we have knowledge of their wonderful nuts they harvested and used as food.  The Cherokee and Apache are just a few who routinely harvested them.  The American Indians shared the knowledge of how to harvest and use the acorn to the early settlers , but somewhere on our evolution of modern man, the knowledge has quieted.  Not to fear, our wonderful world of internet and independent survivalists are bringing that knowledge back.  Here is one of my favorite finds! This City Girl would have never thought that acorns are considered edible like any other nut.  Special care is needed when eating acorns , but you can process them a certain way to ease that bitter taste.  The White Oak Family (Quercus) acorns are said to be less bitter and can be eaten with out the processing.





The photos to your left and above are an example of two types of acorns from the White Oak Family: The White Oak (Quercus alba) and the Burr Oak (Quercus macrocarpa).
